CONTENT-BASED AND TASK-BASED APPROACHES FOR CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS DEVELOPMENT

В данной статье мы предлагаем некоторые подходы к развитию навыков критического мышления посредством контентного и проблемного обучения иностранному языку, направленные на создание условий для творческого решения проблем.

In this article we suggest some approaches to development critical thinking skills through content-based and task-based approaches to teaching a foreign language. They are aimed to creating conditions for problem-solving activities.

Critical thinking is actively conceptualizing, applying, analyzing, synthesizing, and/or evaluating information, generated by observation, experience, reflection, reasoning, or communication, as a guide to belief and action.
Critical thinking has two components: 1) skills to generate information (lower order thinking) and 2) using those skills to guide behavior (higher order thinking).
At foreign language lessons critical thinking can be developed through different types of activities: listing, ordering and sorting, sharing personal experience, problem-solving and project work, which are six major cognitive processes, as Willis defines, that help devise a set of tasks around one topic or theme.
Content-based and Task-based instructions are meaning-focused approaches that reflect real-life language use, develop students’ content knowledge and enhance students’ cognitive skills.
